FOR
PAUL, THE SHED OPENED UP A UNIVERSE OF CHOICES.
AT THE END OF THE DAY THE QUESTION WAS:
WHICH ONE WOULD BEST KEEP HIM FROM BEING DEAD?
A happily married couple, Samantha
and Paul, have recently forged a new life in a home
they've purchased, and are just settling in. While
hunting around curiously in their overgrown backyard,
Paul stumbles upon an ancient, musty shed. Seemingly
unattended for years, mysterious things start to
happen the moment Paul cracks the padlock.
For one confusing and harrowing
Sunday, Paul opens a can of worms that expose the
many potential darker sides to his relationship
with Samantha. Just when he thinks he may have come
full circle, his worst fears start to come true...

ABOUT THE DIRECTOR:
Mike Crowhurst, Director, on
The Shed: This is essentially my debut
short film if you don't count the little "practice"
ones you do along the way to becoming a filmmaker.
The Shed is a 30 minute drama which I deliberately
set in my own house and used minimal cast in order
to keep costs down. I also really wanted to focus
on the small details of the story using a space
and subject matter I was very familiar with. The
look and atmosphere of the film was very important
to me, as well as likeable and versatile characters
and actors. I've always been fascinated with the
subject of time-travel, time-displacement and other
such topics, but I don't like films that get so
absorbed in the idea that they drown out the story
with effects. I wanted this to be a story about
the lives of these two people that have an inexplicable
phenomenon happen along to complicate things, but
not the other way around.
About the Director: I like
a great deal of films but am very specific about
the ones that I love. I wouldn't exactly call myself
a film aficionado whereby I devour any film that
comes along; rather, I pick and choose along fairly
specific lines and these are quite likely the films
I will always shoot. I also enjoy working along
the blurred lines of typical genres and aim to test
those boundaries with future works.
My background is in graphics and
web development and design, but I have been illustrating,
writing and visualising in some creative form or
another since I was quite young. I'm still tossed
up about which road to travel: directing, editing
or shooting as I love all three (and tend to do
all of them on each project I work on!). I was born
in Canada and have lived in Vancouver most of my
life before moving to Australia with my wife in
2004.
